The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty – 17 October 2009

On Saturday 17 October the International Day for the Eradication of Povertywas celebrated in Kielce. Dozens of children came to the toy and games museum, accompanied by their teachers, monitors or grandmothers, to make treasure chests to put in a ‘friendship train’ which will take them to Geneva in December 2009.

In fact, thanks to the Tapori movement, children from all over Poland were able to express loudly and clearly the things most important to them by means of these little boxes. In a few weeks time, a few of these children will be received by the United Nations as representatives of all the others. They will take with them this curious train as proof of the mobilisation and active involvement of each and every one of them in their cause.

On Saturday the majority of the children had already made their treasure chests, so, on arrival they were able to attend a screening of the Tapori film, ‘If we get together we can build a new world’. This short film tells the story of a train which visits the Tapori groups all over the world.

Thus the children were able to reflect together on various different values – solidarity, equality, respect and the rights of the child, and their comments were recorded in a visitor’s book. After a brief snack, the children and the adults with them went on parade with their train. The rain had also decided to take part in the parade but couldn’t do anything to diminish the sparkling colours of the procession. And the great energy shown by the smallest children when they paraded was amazing, balloons in their hands, songs on their lips… It didn’t take them long to arrive at the plaque engraved with the message that had brought them all together, and people from all walks of life were there to express their support.

Wherever men and women are condemned to live in extreme poverty, human rights are violated.
To come together to ensure that these rights be respected is our solemn duty.
