ATD Fourth World’s activity in Côte d’Ivoire began in 1981 with the work of one permanent volunteer, a nurse at the prison camp at Bouaké, in the central part of the country. From this apparently unpromising start sprang various initiatives, including the House of the Arts and the Family, and a street library in a deprived area of the city of Bouaké. Our volunteer has been supported by Ivorian friends, including some former prisoners, and has been joined by other volunteers. Together they are building the foundations of a resistance movement against poverty. Another team was active in Abidjan from 2000 to 2002, and this is currently being developed by friends of ATD Fourth World.

Partnerships with other organisations:
Since 2007 ATD Fourth World has been running awareness-raising sessions and training courses in partnership with organisations such as the Ivorian League of Human Rights, and state agencies such as the Regional Directorate of the Ministry of the Family, Women and Social Affairs in the capital, Yamoussoukro. Our partnership with the latter led to the foundation of the group “Friends of 17th October”, which organised the 17th October celebrations in Yamoussoukro.

Wherever men and women are condemned to live in extreme poverty, human rights are violated.
To come together to ensure that these rights be respected is our solemn duty.
